Corona Virus!

In 2020 by Brent Burdick

No, we don’t have the virus, and we hope you don’t either. Can you tell we are smiling behind the masks? Kim made them to keep us and people we meet safe when we make rare trips out. She and Devri have made quite a few. We have given them to friends and neighbors. Thankfully, all our kids and grandkids are virus-free. We wanted to update you on how our lives and ministries have been impacted by the virus.

First, all my scheduled trips overseas this spring to film Lausanne Global Classrooms have been cancelled due to the virus. It has not been a problem though as there is still a lot of material that was filmed last summer to be made into five other episodes. My goal is to finish all those episodes this year. Next week I will let you know about the most recent episode on Nominalism. Also, I have been teaching more directed-study students and am getting ready to teach the missions class this summer at Gordon-Conwell. I am also preparing an online Zoom training for Samaritan’s Purse workers on a biblical view of tragedy and cataclysm. If your group is interested in something like this, send me an email for more info. Though these are trying times, there is great need to equip people for what God is doing around the world. I’m thankful to be part of that.

For Kim, her work has also increased. She doesn’t go into the office any more but she has been very busy ministering to people. Many lives and families have been impacted by the virus through loss of employment, marriage issues, relapsed addictions, and so on. On top of that, she has been helping LifeGroups get connected so they can meet in video rooms online. She is on the phone or in computer meetings all day! It has been interesting to see new adaptations to ministry. Though it is not the same, in many ways, there are deeper connections being made. I think we will all learn a lot during this unforgettable time.

A verse that comes to mind as we process what is happening is the world is Habakkuk 1:5, ‘Look at the nations and watch–and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told’. I truly believe that God is doing amazing things in the world right now. Many people are turning to him because of the corona virus. We are praying for an outpouring of his Spirit on all people, and that they would confess their sins, repent, and seek the Lord. Everyday brings us one step closer to eternity with him. Everyday, Kim and I work to share his love with the world. May the Lord bless and protect you and your loved ones.
