Do you ever wonder what we are going to do for the rest of eternity?
The typical thought is that we’ll sit around on clouds playing harps. BORING (and un-biblical too)! God has so much more in store for us!
In Genesis chapter 2, verses 15-17, God put Adam in the garden of Eden to “work it and take care of it”. One important thing to note: this was BEFORE the fall, before the punishment and the entrance of pain and problems and sin in the world.
In these verses also, God commands them not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. So, before the fall, man had a job to do, and there were guidelines to live by. Jesus Christ came to redeem the world from the fallen state created by man’s sin.
Certainly, when we get to heaven, things won’t be exactly the same as they were before the fall, but perfect fellowship with God will be restored, and just like in the Garden, we will have work to do.
It won’t be playing harps, though making incredible music may be something we do.
Maybe God will put us in charge of the universe to work it and care for it, just like he did Adam in the garden?
We are made in the image of God! God gave us the capacity to be creative. All the things we enjoy now will pale in comparison to what God has for us then. And we’ll never get bored for all eternity because there will be new surprises every day!
God didn’t make the universe in “all its vast array” for nothing! Ephesians 3:20 says God is able to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine. Likewise, 1 Corinthians 2:9 explains, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him”.
Whatever it is we do for all eternity we cannot begin to fathom now, but we can see from these verses that it is going to be incredible, fulfilling, exciting, and spectacular!
A few years ago my family watched the movie Avatar. What a fascinating world the film maker’s created! The story and special effects made the viewers desire to be part of such a world where you can fly on the back of dragons, and do incredible exploits. I thought as I came out of the theater, “if man can create such an idea in his mind, how much more incredible and exciting and awesome will be the heaven God has for us!”
Something deep inside of all of us longs for that to be a reality now. God is preparing us and making us ready for our eternal home. I can’t wait!
